제9회 일민문화상 받은 ‘서울국제여성영화제’의 이혜경 집행위원장 - 변재란 부위원장

남성 참여도 늘어 12년만에 세계최대 여성영화제로
박찬옥-정재은 감독 등 발굴… “세상 바꾸는 힘 되길”
16일 오후 도착한 서울 서초구 서초동의 서울국제여성영화제 사무실은 찾기가 쉽지 않았다. 주택가 건물 5층 꼭대기. 변변한 간판은커녕 엘리베이터도 없었다. “명색이 국제영화제 사무실인데 좀 누추한가요? 예전에는 더했어요. 교회 건물 지하방에서 쥐와 함께 살았고, 천장엔 붉은색 파이프가 달려 있었죠. 그걸 보고 ‘포스트모던’하다고들 했으니 우리가 매사 긍정적인 건지, 욕심이 없는 건지….”(이혜경 집행위원장)
제9회 일민문화상을 받는 서울국제여성영화제 사무실은 그렇게 소박한 긍정의 힘이 넘쳤다. 1997년 4월 ‘서울여성영화제’로 출범할 때부터 영화제를 이끌어 올해 11회 서울국제여성영화제를 맞이한 이 집행위원장은 “학문적 의미나 투쟁적 구호에 앞서 자기 긍정이 있는 창조적 축제의 장을 마련하려 해왔다”고 말했다.
영화제의 시작은 이 위원장이 대표를 맡았던 ‘여성문화예술기획’이었다. 1992년 기획해 1997년까지 공연한 여성주의 연극 ‘자기만의 방’이 흥행에 성공해 종잣돈 6000만 원이 생겼다. 서울 종로구 한국재즈클럽에 얹혀살던 회사는 동숭동의 한 교회에 ‘자기만의 방’을 얻었고 1997년 4월 ‘서울여성영화제’가 첫발을 내디뎠다. 일주일간 열린 영화제에서 9개국 38편이 상영됐고 1만9900명이 참여했다. 변재란 부집행위원장은 당시 분위기를 ‘신흥종교’ ‘부흥회’에 비유했다.
“한 관객은 종일 영화를 봤더니 허리가 아프다며 쿠션을 들고 다녔어요. 여성의 지위가 예전보다는 나아졌다고 해도 여성의 감성을 건드려줄 문화는 없었잖아요. 그 갈증을 딱딱한 강의나 운동이 아닌 영상으로 채워주니까, 단비를 흠뻑 맞은 기분이었던 거예요.”
초기엔 20대 전문직 여성이 주 관객이었지만 해를 거듭할수록 남성 관객과 40, 50대 등으로 관객층이 다양해지고 있다. ‘그들만의 축제’ ‘남성 배제적인 영화제’라는 눈총도 이젠 옛말. 객석점유율이 평균 90%를 웃돌고 2007년 문화체육관광부의 평가에서도 국내 국제영화제 중 만족도 1위를 차지했다. 초청국가와 상영작 수도 늘어 11회에는 40개국 105편을 관객에게 소개했다.
특히 신진 여성감독을 발굴하는 ‘아시아 단편경선’ 부문은 1회 33편에서 11회 228편으로 규모가 8배 가까이 늘었다. ‘파주’의 박찬옥, ‘고양이를 부탁해’의 정재은, ‘4인용 식탁’의 이수연 감독 등이 이 영화제가 낳은 여성감독이다. 변 위원장은 “1회 때 국내 최초 여성감독인 박남옥 씨의 작품을 발굴해 회고전을 열었는데 당시만 해도 국내의 여성 대중영화 감독은 7명에 불과했다”고 말했다. 이제 이 영화제는 아녜스 바르다, 타미네 밀라니 등 해외 유명 여성감독의 작품을 소개하면서 세계적인 여성 영화인들이 교류하는 대표적인 장이 되고 있다.
여성영화제로서 세계 최대 규모로 몸집이 커진 만큼 다른 나라 영화제가 한 수 배워가는 모델로서도 자리를 굳혔다. 일본 오사카 여성영화제, 인도 첸나이 여성영화제, 독일 아시아여성영화제 등이 출범하는 데 도움을 줬다. 이 위원장은 “해외 게스트들이 우리 영화제를 보고 ‘여성 관객에서 퀴어 관객까지 이렇게 다양한 사람들이 어떻게 모일 수 있느냐’며 놀란다”고 말했다.
서울국제영화제는 초기부터 여러 특별전과 심포지엄을 통해 성적소수자나 이주여성 등의 목소리를 듣고 고민해왔다. 2010년 12회 영화제의 주제는 ‘문제적 모성’. 여성영화 소재 개발을 위해 창작자와 산업을 연계해주는 ‘피치&캐치’ 사업 부문도 신설했다. 이 위원장의 방에 빼곡히 붙어 있는 포스트잇이 영화제가 앞으로 해야 할 일들을 말해주는 것 같았다.
“영화가 세상을 바꿀 수 있다는 걸 믿으며 영화 일을 시작했어요. 최소한 세상을 바꾸고 싶어 하는 사람의 마음을 다독여줄 수 있지는 않겠어요? 때론 따끔하면서도 푸근하게, 우리 영화제가 더 나은 세상을 위한 힘이 되길 바랍니다.”(변 부위원장)
